I was
apprenticed to Joe Finch at Appin Pottery 1979 – 84,
set up Argyll Pottery near Oban 1998. Most pots are
thrown on the wheel from our own blend of stoneware clay; we also make our own
glazes. I produce a full range of domestic ware with some contemporary pieces,
fired to 1300’C in our wood burning kiln.

My work
is inspired by the sea and shore. I incorporate wood and found objects
collected from beaches into my pieces. I love the tactile quality of smooth
pebbles and try to achieve a similar finish on my pots. They are thrown or handformed, smoothed then raku or smoke fired and lightly
polished.

Work is
white porcelain some with Oxides, some with printed paper. I am influenced by place and time and often
use textures from nature and man made objects found at a specific place on a visit
with my porcelain clay, boards and a rolling pin. I like the immediacy of the process and being
out “on site” is one of the pleasures of this way of working. I try to look at the textures of everything –
cliffs, flowers and leaves but also cigarette butts and flattened tin cans if
that is what I see! They all form the texture and experience of that place and
time!

Stoneware
is an excellent material with which to make practical pots. It’s
hardwearing qualities when combined with reduction firing allow you to produce
very varied and individual work. It is important to remember that the pots we
use every day should be every bit as interesting and pleasant to handle as
those we keep on the shelf.

We have
been in business as Northumbrian craft pottery for twenty one years producing
mainly sprig ware and functional pottery all hand thrown. We have recently
however {perhaps slightly overdue} afforded ourselves time to experiment with
porcelain and produce pieces more suitable for galleries under our own names
Harding & Palmer. As we fire to high temperature with a reduction
atmosphere we felt it would be fun to play about with some rich copper red and celadons with copper blush. We hope you feel that the
results are appealing.

media artist-maker, Kirsty O’Connor currently works in clay and paper –making
voluptuous pots and unique books. These are very different disciplines but she
approaches them in a similar way allowing the materials to dictate her

altered states and the artist as shaman.
Her smoke-fired figurative vessels are created in honour
of the great goddess and her myriad aspects as celebrated in different
cultures.
